An Example from my Classes
The students in the
classes have varied educational backgrounds.
Everyone has at least 10 years of Public
School, a requirement to be a Military
Policeman in Denmark. However, some are
craftsmen, artisans, some have finished
Senior High School and some some have a BA.
Different Levels, Alternating Teaching
Everyone understands the basics of phonetics -
no matter the language spoken. So in order
to open my students' eyes for this I use
phonetics as one of my first tests.
Utilizing simple speaking exercises it is
possible to teach the very basics of the
foreign language. Often these lessons have
several positive side effects:
1: The students feel that they are on
common ground no matter educational
background level since most Danes have
the same phonetic problems in speaking
English. Using their knowledge as a
foundation, I designed my lessons to use
that knowledge, starting with simple
speaking exercises to build new language
skills.
2:
The exercises demonstrate to the students
that phonetics are the basic building
block of all languages and the
utilization of phonetic principles allow
quick and easy speaking of any language. You
only have to learn the vocabulary since you
know how to form the words.
3:
I use military police tasks and
basic operations for the training
environment. The students learn standard
military police functions, operations,
communications and reports as an integral
part of their language lessons. The results
are a better understanding of military
police procedures and responsibilities as
well as learning a new language.
